  • Twisters win 4 out of 6 races at Flushing Distance meet (10/19/2004)

In the first traditional meet of the fall SCY season, the Twisters raced in the 2004 Flushing Distance meet. We had 15 swimmers who registered in 6 races, winning 4 of them: 400 IM 13-14 boys: Gabriel Yanez (13), 500 free girls 12-under: Annie Zhu (10), 400 IM and 500 free boys 12- under: Phoon Sangtippawan (12). Also good swims by Nader Yamout (10), first 10-under boys in 500 free with a drop of 30 seconds, Brendan Erskine (11), 4th in both events and Kelly Guaman (11), 3rd in 400 IM.

  • Strong swims at Flushing Junior Championship (10/26/2004)

The Twisters proved their force with 14 individual and one relay wins at this year Flushing Junior Championship. On Saturday, the 11-12 boys won the 200 MR (Christopher Doherty, Phoon, Kryspin and Christopher Polanco) and all 4 individual events with Kryspin Gumiela going 4 for 4. Actually in 3 out of 4 events the Twisters came 1 - 2, Phoon Sangtippawan, with 3 second places being the only challenge for Kryspin. On the 13-14 boys category we had two more wins with Gabriel Yanez in 200 back (2nd in 1000 free, for the first time trying this event and 3rd in 100 fly) and Jan Stepinski winning with a strong finish the 100 breast with a PB of almost 3 seconds. Also in 100 breast a good performance by the 3rd place Jacub Jaszewski, and a solid 200 MR (Gabriel, Jan, Jose Polanco and Jack), coming within 0.15 seconds of the team record, for 2nd place.

On Sunday, we had great swims as well with Annie Zhu going again 4 for 4, (wins, team records and 3 out of 4 NRT). Her best performance was in the 50 breast as she is now 0.03 seconds of the Metro LSC Record. Mallory Cruise (15 - 18 girls) double winner in 200 back and 100 fly (2nd in 50 free) with good times for this start of the season. Samuel Mo (10 - under boys) with a very solid win in 50 fly (2nd in 50 free and 50 back, 3rd in 50 breast). Omar Ozcan (15 - 18 boys), winning his signature event 50 free and coming 2nd in 200 back and 3rd in 100 fly.

Other Twisters on top:  Angela Sun (10), 2nd in 50 back and 50 fly, and Cagla Fidan (9) 3rd in 50 free. • Annie Zhu breaks 2 Metro LSC records at The Big Apple Classic (11/17/2004)

After rewriting the 8 and under Metro LSC record book, and one year of hard training, Annie  does' it again: This past weekend, just two months after turning 10, in her first event of the meet, she lowered the 14 year old Metro LSC 9 - 10 girls 100 IM record (1:06.62) with a very fast 1:06.06. Then, after two days of fast swimming which included five more Team records and two brand new Top 16 reportable times, in her last individual event of the meet, she blasted more than 2 seconds of a 1995 100 breast Metro Record with a time of 1:11.34. With this performance Annie ranks in the first 10, 100 breast 10-u girls times ever swum in the USA, and she is coming within just 0.97 seconds of the national record. Annie proved her versatility by capturing her age group High Point Trophy with 10 wins out of 10 races.

Still swimming unattached, Sammy Mo (10) won his age group HPT in the boys 10-under category with individual wins in 50 back, 50 and 100 breast, 50 fly and 100 IM, breaking four team records.

With many fast races, including two wins in 200 IM and 100 breast, Mr. Phoon Sangtippawan (12) finished second overall for 11-12 boys category.

And completing the winners list, with wins in 50 free and 100 back, and coming second in 100 breast  Mallory Cruise (17) collected enough points for the third place overall in just half of the meet.

Other individual winners: Kryspin Gumiela (12) in 50 free, 100 back, 50 breast and 100 fly; Jack Jaszewski (14) in 50 free, Jan Stepinski (13) in 100 and 200 breast, Nader Yamout (10) in 200 free and Gabriel Yanez (13) in 100 fly. The Twisters won two relays: 10-under 200 MR with Carolina Laskowski, Annie, Janae Barrett and Cagla Fidan, and the 13-14 boys 200 MR with Gabriel, Jan, Jose Polanco and Jack. I have to mention the good effort put into our young 8-under relays by Alexandra Rubiano, Christina Preda, Tabitha Barbosa and Ayse Buyukerkan coming just 2 seconds short of the Metro Record in 200 medley relay.

This past weekend, our 8 and under girls Tabitha Barbosa, Alexandra Rubiano, Ayse Buyukerkan, Christina Preda and Wynona Yu took on the Metropolitan records for 200 Free and 200 medley relays at the Badger Holiday Meet in Lehman College pool.  Unfortunately after two heart breaking/nails biting races they lost at the wire to the Badger swim club relays. Nevertheless, their effort was outstanding:  all girls, coached by Verny Rodriguez swum great, well under the previous marks: more than 2 seconds faster in 200 free, and almost 3 seconds faster in the 200 medley. Tabitha and Alexandra both won one individual race as well, 25 fly and 25 breast respectively.

Her 50 fly is her first NRT for that stroke, and her 100 IM lowered her own Metro Record for the third time this season. • SENIOR METRO (02/07/2005)

This year only four Twisters attended the winter Metro SCY Senior Championship. We could not rank high as a team but nevertheless we had great races: on Friday, Annie Zhu (10), the youngest swimmer of the meet, had a great swim in the morning, winning her heat and qualifying for the afternoon third final with a great 1:10.68. In the final she swam another great race finishing 22nd with 1:10.73. The prelim performance is only 0.31 seconds from the 1995 10-under girls national record by Laura Davis, and placed Annie as second ever in USA in this event.

Saturday, Mallory Cruise(17) qualified and competed in the second final with a solid 1:00.01 for 100 back good for 12th, Andrzej Lenard(20) finished 7th in 100 back with a sectional cut of 54.40, and Jan Stepinski(13) swam a 2:25.01 for 200 breast, placing him in 28th position in Metro.

Sunday Mallory and Andrzej both made finals for the 200 back and managed two new team records in this event. Mallory placed 18th with a great finish and a time of 2:10.73, her personal best by 2 seconds, and Andrzej finished 4th overall again with a personal best of 1:55.92.

New Team Record (yards):

Annie Zhu (10): 100 breast 1:10.68 (new Metro Record)

Annie's new USA National record set the tone for the best Twister's performance EVER at JO's (03/03/2005)

If anybody had any doubt, now is clear: hard work and attention to details pays off; The 2005 SCY Metro Junior Olympics Championship is now over and the Twisters where a big part of it with one National Record, four Metro LSC records, six Meet records and 31 Team records this is a good measure of the work everybody put in this season so far. I would like to thank all swimmers attending as everybody pull for the TEAM: every single relay team A or B scored points for the most ever at JO's: 1453 in total. Thank to all parents for spending long hours and especially those who volunteered as timers: Mrs. Barbara Cruise, Mrs. Linda Zhu, Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Julia Wong, Mr. Doherty, Mr. Sun, and Mrs. Paulina Yanez.

And with drama: Annie coming in second in the 50 free race by 1 tenth after winning the 500 free and Sammy's three day challenge for HPT. TWISTERS HELP METRO TO FIRST PLACE AT THE 2005 SCY EASTERN ZONE (04/06/2005)

Last time Metropolitan LSC won the SCY Eastern Zones, none of the five Twisters qualified to represent Metro this year where born. But that did not stop any of them to swim great at the G.C.I.T. pool in southern New Jersey, scoring 139 of the Metro's winning 1038 points. Our swimmers returned with six Zone individual titles, five by Annie Zhu (10) in 100 back, 50 and 100 breast, 100 IM (1:04.22, Metro Record) and 200 IM, and Samuel Mo (10) in 100 back. Annie was also second in 50 free and part of the three winning 10 and under girls relays. Sam also got second in three events 50 free, 50 back and 50 fly, one 5th in 100 free and one 7th in 100 fly and was part of three Metro 10 and under boys relays winning both free and coming second in the medley.
