  • GREAT START FOR THE TWISTERS (10/21/2003)

After only six weeks of training, and with new additions (we registered about 20 new swimmers this season) the Twisters started with two consecutive meets, and a lot of great swims. Among those, eight new team records: Annie Zhu (9), for 50 free (29.29), 50 back (33.71), 50 breast (36.12), 50 fly (32.94) and 500 free (6:10.99), Omar Ozcan (17), 50 free (21.83) and 100 fly (55.41), and, the 15-18 girls 200 medley relay of Mallory Cruise, Angela Zhu, Bethany Wong and Sarah Mark (2:05.38). The Twisters scored enough points for the second place in the Junior Swim Championship, with eight individual and three relays wins. We have already 16 swimmers qualified for Junior Olympics and 11 of them with cuts for the Zone Qual Meet.

  • ANGELA ZHU, NEW YORK CITY PSAL CHAMPION IN 100 BREASTSTROKE (11/13/2003)

Representing Midwood High, Angela Zhu, become the first Twister, boy or girl to win a New York City  PSAL championship event. It was a very strong race with Angela pulling away for the win on the last 10 yards after going stroke by stroke with Bronx Science senior Emily Shek. In her other final (50 free) Angela came in 5th place. With her win for 100 breastroke, Angela qualified to represent New York City at the States Championship. Also making finals: Bethany Wong (6th in 100 breast and 7th in 200 IM) and Sarah Mark (11th 100 back and 16th 500 free) for Midwood, and Caroline Kwa (9th in 100 breast and 13th 200 IM) for Bronx Science.

·        NEW YEAR BRINGS GREAT SWIMS FOR THE TWISTERS (01/22/2004)

Our team heads into the 2004 Short Course Championship season stronger than ever. And to put it in numbers, the Twisters lowered no less than 25 team records this year (84 in total since the season started), at the Dr. Martin Luther King meet in Long Island. We had very good performances throughout the age groups and gender, coming in 3rd place out of 20 teams, less than 10 points from 2nd place, LIAC. At 8 and under girls, Cagla Fidan had a clean sweep, winning all events and the High Point Trophy and she was part of the 10-under girls relay, which lowered both 200 yards team records. She has now cut times for JO in all 50's and 100 IM, not bad for a 8 year old. The other High Point Trophy winner also with a clean sweep, Annie Zhu lowered her team records in 7 events. The Twisters won 6 relays, all for the 10 and under, the 200 Medley Relay Boys 11-12, and the 400 Medley Relay Boys Open. We had as well many swimmers with new qualifying Championship times many of them which will represent the Twisters for the first time at JO, Zone Qual, Senior Metro and Sectionals.

  • ROGER ALMEIDA AND OMAR OZCAN, NY CITY PSAL CHAMPIONS  (02/10/2004)

Swimming for Brooklyn Tech, Roger Almeida won the PSAL Championship final in 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:03.77. It was a very exciting race, with Roger taking an early lead in the butterfly leg, then fighting to hold on, on back and breast, as four swimmers turned together at the 150 yards. But by this time the race was over as Roger turned into overdrive finishing with a 28.30 free split. For this performance Roger was presented with the Outstanding Senior Swimmer Award for the 2004 PSAL Championship.

The second Twister Champion this year was Omar Ozcan representing James Madison. His 100 back race was less dramatic as Omar got an early lead with a good underwater kick right from the start and none of his competitors posed any treat to him during the entire race. He also qualified for the 100 yards free with a time of 48.66. Both Roger and Omar will represent N Y City at the New York States Championship. Other Twisters making finals and scoring points for their High Schools  Ildan Sabanovic and Benjamin Wong (Brooklyn Tech), Louis Wong (James Madison), Ronny Pulgar (L.I.C.) and Ziye Lin (Stuyversant). Congratulations to all!!!

  • FAST SWIMS AT FRAN SCHNARR PENTATHLON (01/27/2004)

  • with Cagla Fidan (high point trophy) as their leader, the twisters 8 year old girls finished first at 2004 metropolitan 8-under Championship (03/16/2004)

One week after Seniors the youngest Twisters had their own 2004 Metropolitan 8 and under Championship. And judging by the results looks like our team has a great future ahead. The team of Cagla Fidan, Christina Preda, Tabitha Barbosa, Ayse Buyukerkan, Alexandra Rubiano, Farzana Zaman, Anna Jaros, Gabriela Almeida, Daniel Salgado, Richard Dong, Austin Pu and Kevin Barbosa, had a good time and great swims, many personal best times.

Winning 5 out of 6 races Cagla scored 117 points and was awarded the 8 year old girl Champion Trophy. And again our girls relays of Cagla, Christina, Tabitha, Ayse and Alexandra swam for 2 wins in 100 (1:08.40) and 200 free (2:32.06) and 2 runner up in 100 (1:19.22) and 200 medley (2:53.68) all four in team record times. On the boys side Daniel, Richard, Austin and Kevin proved to be the fastest Twisters 8-u quartet ever in 200 FR (2:45.23) and 200 MR (3:13.08).  This is a great performance made possible by their hard work and by coach Verny with eight of the twelve Twisters joining the team less than six months ago.

  • TWO MORE RELAYS AND FOUR INDIVIDUAL TEAM RECORDS BROKEN AT THE 2004 SCY SENIOR MEET CHAMPIONSHIP (03/16/2004

Facing a tough competition the older Twisters continues their winter 2004 Championship season with good swims at Senior Metro. Our team finished in 14th place with only 6 swimmers attending.

Just one week after the JO's the Open relays of Joseph Danko, Ronny Pulgar, Roger Almeida and Omar Ozcan lowered their team records for 400 yards FR (3:21.45) and 400 yards MR (3:46.60), coming very close to make Speedo Sectional times for those events. We had good individual swims as well with 4 team records by Mallory Cruise after only 2 weeks of training, with a strong 2:12.92 in 200 back , Roger in 100 fly (55.11) and 200 fly (1:59.05) and Joseph in 200 breast (2:21.51).

  • A RECORD FIVE TWISTERS QUALIFY TO REPRESENT METROPOLITAN SWIMMING AT 2004 WINTER EASTERN ZONES (03/24/2004)

As this long winter season comes fast to a close, our whole team performs better proving that all the hard work we put into every practice pays of indeed. This year 23 Twisters had personal best swims fast enough to participate in the Metro Zone Qualifier meet. It was a very strong meet with the best Metro swimmers competing for a spot in the team that will travel to Virginia and face the best swimmers from 13 North East States. To make the team the swimmer should finish first or second among the best. Well, we had five swimmers to do just that:

Annie Zhu (9) first in 50 breast 100 breast, 100 IM, 200 IM and 100 free and second in 50 free, Sarah Bouzarouata (10) second in 100 back, Phoon Sangtippawan (11) second in 200 breast, Mallory Cruise (16) first in 100 back, and Omar Ozcan first in 50 free and 100 free.

A special mention to Jan Stepinski (12) which came second in both 100 and 200 breast events but waived his eligibility to participate, Kryspin Gumiela with strong swims, coming third and missing the qual in 50 breast by 0.04 seconds and Anthony Preda who was not eligible to participate in the finals as he will turn 13, one day before Zones with strong PB times in the prelims. And then proving that the impossible can happen, Cagla Fidan (8) swimming a great 34.39 erasing Annie's 8 and under team record in 50 fly.

New Team Records:

Cagla Fidan (8): 50 fly 34.39

The last meet of the season was another success for the Twisters. We had a lot of personal best swims many good enough for the summer JO and Zone cuts. All 6 team records where broken by three girls, with a pair each:

Laura Salgado (12): 200 free 2:15.51 and 500 free 6:03.39 (after a head to head race with Sandra Zawadka, 6:03.54 also well under previous mark)

  • ANNIE ZHU, DOUBLE  EASTERN ZONE CHAMPION SCY (04/10/2004)

From March 31 until April 2, 2004 the best age group swimmers in the North East of US came down to compete at the 2004 SCY Eastern Zone Championship in George Mason University (Virginia) pool. All five Twisters who represented Metro in this very hard competition had great swims with many personal best:

Annie Zhu, prove to be one of the best 10-under girls in North East winning 50 and 100 breast, coming second in 100 IM and 200 IM, 4th in 50 free and 6th in 100 free, she was also part of three 10-under girls Metro relays winning 200 Medley and 200 Free and 2nd (by .03 seconds) in 400 free. Also in the 10-under girls Sarah Bouzarouata came 5th with a strong 1:08.35 for 100 back, scoring points and helping the Metro 10-u Girls win their age group. In the 15-18 girls group, Mallory Cruise continues to drop time in her quest for a Junior National cut, coming in 4th place for the 100 back race, she was also  part of the Metro 200 free (3rd)  and 400 medley (5th, Mallory's split being 2nd fastest) relays. • ON THE FIRST MEET OF THE 2004 SUMMER LCM SEASON, 12 TWISTERS QUALIFIED FOR THIS YEAR EMPIRE STATE GAMES (07/13/2004)

We all like good starts, because a good start will carry your performance and confidence trough out of the entire season even in a short and intense summer LCM.  The ESG trials held in Riverbank pool prove to be just that: a great start for the whole team. Unfortunately, because a very tight schedule only 5 Twisters will make the trip to Binghamton University to represent New York City at the Games: Kelvin Poon, Angela Zhu, Louis Wong, Sara Mark and AJ Brulhardt.
