After winning 50 breast (36.44), 100 breast (1:19.33) and 500 free (6:09.80) at
the Metropolitan Zone Qualifying meet, "Mr. Phoon" went on
to represent Metropolitan LSC to the Eastern Zone Championship at GCIT in New
Jersey. There he faced a very tough competition racing the best 10-under boys
from 13 Northeast states. He swam some outstanding races winning 100 breast
(1:18.03, new team record, only 4 hundreds from USA Top 16 reportable time),
coming 5th in 50 breast (36.48) and racing to 8th place in 500 free (6:02.77,
also new team record). With his win in 100 breast,
"Mr. Phoon" made (team) history as he is the first Twister to win a
race at the Zones.
The LGAC had a very good show at the 2003 Empire State Games Trials at
In the first all team meters meet of the season the Twisters broke 18 INDIVIDUAL
AND 4 RELAYS TEAM RECORDS. Beside Annie, we had new records for each Age
Group: Sarah Bouzarouata (9-10), with a double: 50 back 40.38, and 200
IM 3:09.77; Bethany Wong, (13-14) 100 breast 1:26.94; Mallory Cruise,
(15-18) with a triple, 50 free 30.10, 100 back 1:10.55 and 100 fly 1:13.27. On
the boys side Phoon Sangtippawan (9-10) had a great meet, with new team
records in 100 free 1:13.65, 50 fly 36.99, 200 IM 2:53.99 and 50 breast 41.89; Anthony
Preda (11-12) 50 breast 39.89; Mauro Pazmino (13-14) with double in
100 free 1:01.22 and 200 IM 2:33.11 and Roger Almeida (15-18) 100 fly
1:03.93. A nice surprise was the very young 200 free relay for
girls 10-under of Cagla Fidan (8), Sarah (9), Kelly
Guaman (9) and Annie (8) with 2:29.24. The boys 10 and under swam
two very good relays as well 200 free 2:20.12 and, coming close to Top 16
reportable, 200 Medley 2:36.63, both relays with Michael May, Christopher
Doherty, Christopher Polanco and Phoon. Last relay record was broken
by the boys 11-12 medley with Gabriel Yanez,
Anthony, Jose Polanco and Jan Stepinski. We also had many new Zone
and JO cut times (see meet page). Way to go Twisters
After a great SCY season, in the first Long Course meet, Annie continues
her quest of sweeping Metro LSC records. On June 22nd in Asphalt Green she
swam four outstanding races, breaking four team and two Metro records for
girls 8 and under. She started with a fast 39.99 for 50 fly, then she warm up
with a 39.21 for 50 back, both new team records. She saved the best for
the second half of the meet with a 43.85 for 50 meters breast which is a new
Metro record by more than 1.5 seconds, and then on her last event of the day
she blasted a 20 year old Metro mark for 100 meters free by more than 2 seconds
swimming 1:14.94.

OUTSTANDING

The 2003 summer

meet to date on which the swimmers results exceeded the coaches’
expectation, and that in itself is a great performance (!!!). There where great
individual races, relay wins, group accomplishments and in the end an
outstanding team effort, with every swimmer doing their best:
